On this weeks episode of culture call, we take a look at the culturally rich sport ''Ba Chouke'' of Iran.
Ba Chouke wrestling is one of the most ancient and most popular sports in Iran. This derivative of wrestling was common just in North Khorasan in Iran, but over time the sport gradually spread to the south of the province. In addition to maintaining a great degree cultural richness, every year Ba Chouke accounts for thousands of spectators.

In Ba Chouke, an ordinary bout will last 5 minutes if one competitor has not already won before the time limit is up. If the match is level after the 5 minutes is up, an extra 3 minutes will be added to the bout. In the event that both athletes cannot best their opponent, both athletes will be weighed and the lighter wrestler will come away with the victory.

A Ba Chouke athlete can earn points on the scoreboard in a number of ways which will build up their tally and help them win the match. One way to be one step closer to victory is force their opponent into a correct hold. This occurs when an opponent is thrown into the par terre position which occurs when a competitor lands on their hands and knees. 1 point will be rewarded for this. Another way to earn extra points is if the attempted throw of an opponent begins inside the mat and the athlete defending the takedown lands outside it. 2 points will be rewarded for such a takedown. 1 point will also be rewarded to a successful takedown will ends as one athlete lands with their hips, palms, and one elbow are down on the ground. An athlete may also win by stroke. This occurs when a competitors is thrown on either one or two shoulders. Another way to win by stroke id to force your opponent so that both palms and shoulders touch the ground

Every year, The Ba Chouke national championships are held in Iran during the Farvadin month, the first month of the Iranian calendar.
Ba Chouke wrestling is a beloved sport, an athletic exercise, and most importantly, a cultural ritual that is of integral importance ingrained in local Iranian life. This sport is commonly practiced on several joyous occasions such as festivals, holidays, and wedding parties. It safe to say that this is another sport with rich heritage and tradition, cherished by the locals.
